- "Soldier's child is a lullaby,
though as it was being written it became a sad little lullaby indeed.
While writing the melody I noticed a martial quality to the beat and
tempo and, so, I began to think of soldiers and parades and of how
children love to watch them marching on their way to some adventure.
But, as the song evolved, I realized that not every child who watched
his or her father march away to war would receive the joy of reunion.
Some children , like so many soldiers, are expected to be brave in the
face of death. If they do not have their own statue they most
certainly, must have their own song."

Lyrics:
- Chorus:
- Listen to them now, Don’t you hear them now,
- Can’t you hear them now, with me.
- Marching up the road, up the dusty road,
- Marching up the road, you’ll see.
- I’ll be home again one day.. his father said.
- Though I travel such a long ways away.
- Far across the icy sea, I’ll fight to keep us free.
- I’ll fight for you and me.
-
- He’ll be home again one day.. his mother said.
- Though he’s traveled such a long ways away.
- Far across the icy sea, he fights to keep us free.
- He fights for you and me.
- 3. He’s no coming home with us
today.. his sergeant said.
- Though he’s
traveled such a long ways away.
- Far across
the icy sea, he fought to keep us free.
- He died for
you and me.
